Embodied Carbon Declared

Embodied Carbon Declared is a new online platform, created for ACAN Sweden that presents the declared CO2 emissions from construction on project-, municipality- and developer level for the first time in the world. In total and per square meter.
The construction and real estate sector accounted for 22% of Sweden’s greenhouse gas emissions in 2021. 22% of this, in turn, came from new construction – and the emissions are increasing. Globally construction generates 11% of the climate emissions.
There is a lack of knowledge in Sweden, and globally, regarding the climate emissions on project level. A new level of transparency is urgently needed to effectively decrease the emissions from the construction industry.
Together with Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) Sweden, we created the new online platform Embodied Carbon Declared (Byggutsläppslistan). The site displays declared emissions associated with the cradle-to-site (A1–5) stages of Swedish construction projects sorted by project, municipality, developer and building type.
The data published is sourced from the Swedish National Board of Housing, Building and Planning (Boverket) and is based on the climate declarations that developers are required by law to make for new construction, since January 1, 2022.
The purpose of Embodied Carbon Declared is to provide a new level of transparency about construction emissions and improve the collective awareness of the construction industry’s climate impact and thereby accelerate the sustainable transition of the sector.
The declared construction emissions from 1,155 projects, 127 municipalities and 386 developers in Sweden are published on the website. New projects are continuously added.
The project is an honoree in the Climate category of Fast Company’s WORLD CHANGING IDEAS 2024.
